Outhouse Style Bathroom Decorating Ideas
Most things come and go in cycles. When they go, we tend to be glad they are going. When they return, those who watched them go cannot understand. So it is with outhouse style bathroom decorating ideas. Those who once had to use outhouses find it absurd that someone would want to decorate in that manner. Those who never used them think of outhouse style bathroom decorating ideas as clever or edgy.
Outhouse style bathroom decorating ideas are great in cabins or summer homes. They work well in country homes, too. The trick is to choose those that will carry your whimsical theme indoors while looking classic.
Focal Point of Outhouse Style Bathroom Decorating Ideas
As with all bathroom decorating, you should look for a wall hanging or shower curtain that will be a focal point. A photo of an old outhouse is a good beginning. You may even be able to take a photo yourself if you know where an old outhouse still stands. Or shop for a shower curtain depicting one or more outhouses. We saw both wall hanging and shower curtain online, nicely done in woodsy shades of green and brown. Trees overhung the outhouses, and paths trailed back to the house. You can use the colors of your focal point in the rest of your bathroom decorating.
Wooden Floor
A wooden floor is good when using outhouse style, since it reminds one of a dirt path. Look for something that will shed water, of course. Choose bath mats in dark green and brown. For a more country look, use small braided scatter rugs in greens and browns.
Walls
Outhouse style bathroom decorating is a perfect place for wainscoting in medium to dark brown. The vertical lines of the wainscoting, running from baseboard to a height of 3 or 4 feet, give the feeling of trees. Cap the wainscoting with slightly lighter wooden chair rail molding.
Choose light, creamy beige from your focal point for paint or paper above the wainscoting. If you like wall borders, you might want to find one with trees, small outhouses, or other woodsy feel.
Furnishings
Outhouse style bathroom decorating ideas don’t stop there. You will also want to consider your furnishings. Think antique.
* pedestal sink with antique-style fixtures
* toilet with wooden seat
* claw-leg bathtub or plain, modern tub enclosed in wainscoting
Accessories
Complete your bathroom decorating with accessories such as a large wooden bucket or galvanized tub to hold bath towels and soaps - or magazines. Put a plant in a galvanized metal watering can and place it at the corner of the tub. Above the sink, hang a mirror in a plain wooden frame. Use baskets for face tissues and waste can. Put liquid soap or hand cream in a small Mason jar dispenser.
Tying It Together
Your bathroom decorating project will be most successful if you tie it together with outdoor objects. Hang a broom made of brush. Add a small, wooden birdhouse. Use your imagination as to what surrounded outhouses.
Finally, hang a crude “OUTHOUSE” sign on your door.
