Closet Bathroom Design

Expert AuthorWhen you look at a closet and think about bathroom design, you may throw up your hands. You don’t know a thing about small bathroom design styles, let alone know how to remodel small bathrooms or install a closet bathroom.

Small bathroom design styles are the subject of another article already posted on this website. If you want to read it, click here. In this article, we want to look more at closet bathroom design. This is a form of small bathroom design, but with a few twists.

Closet bathroom design and installation can be daunting. If you take time to map it out, however, you will be encouraged. Does that mean nothing will go wrong? No. It simply means fewer things will go wrong. If it works on paper, it is more likely to work in reality.

First Things First

When it comes to closet bathroom design and installation, you should know first how much space you have. Suppose this is a new closet bathroom. You want to install it in a large closet you have under a flight of stairs. Begin by taking measurements:

* Depth of the closet, front to back
* Length of the closet, left to right
* Height of the closet at its highest and lowest points

In closet bathroom design and installation, you don’t need to work with depth until later. Length and height are the up-front factors. The closet must be high enough for people to stand comfortably.

Imagine you are facing a closet with the highest part to your left – probably 8′ or more. At the other end of the closet, to your right, the ceiling slants downward. It may slant all the way to the floor. You will only be able to use the portion that has a ceiling of at least 6.5′. The length of your closet bathroom is the distance from the 8′ ceiling to the 6.5′ ceiling.

For the neatest bathroom design, plan to construct a wall at the 6.5′ point, ending the bathroom there.

Now let’s look at three closet bathroom design and installation ideas you might use. Sketch them on paper, and see how they work.

Closet Bathroom Design and Installation Idea #1

Design the closet bathroom so that the wall at the highest end is used for a small sink and mirror. If you are tall, you may often have wondered: why are bathroom sinks so short? Sinks in vanities are low to accommodate average family members, including children. Your small bathroom design, however, will allow you to put the sink where you want it. Use a wall-hung sink and place it at a height that is comfortable for you and others who will use it. Add a mirror above the sink and lights on either side of the mirror. Beneath the sink, you will have foot room, as well as space for a waste basket or other accessories you want.

Closet Bathroom Design and Installation Idea #2

Your closet bathroom design will be balanced by placing the toilet at the other end, where the ceiling reaches its lowest point. Sketch the toilet on your bathroom design sheet, facing toward the sink and mirror. You will have space above it for a light fixture with an exhaust fan.

Closet Bathroom Design and Installation Idea #3

As you look at the bathroom design sheet you are drawing, you will note that there is little space remaining. Place a towel bar or two on the wall opposite the door. Install a coat or robe hook on the back of the door.

Helpful Tip

Installation of plumbing and electricity are best left to professionals. You will also want to be sure you acquire necessary building permits.
